2 Simple Ingredients
Gluten-Free Puff Pastry: Thanks to ready-made gluten-free puff pastry dough, this dessert is incredibly quick and easy! I use and recommend Schar Gluten Free Puff Pastry for these Nutella Swirls. The dough does require a few extra steps to be flexible enough for shaping the rolls. See the blue box below for tips.
I also tested this recipe with Sweet Loren’s Gluten Free Puff Pastry. I love this dough in many puff pastry treats, like Gluten-Free Parmesan Cheese Straws or Gluten-Free Pumpkin Pull-Apart Puff Pastry. However, I was not happy with the results for this recipe. The dough needs to be baked at a high temperature to crisp properly, and it’s unfortunately not an ideal temperature for the Nutella.
Feel free to substitute homemade gluten-free puff pastry dough, as long as the recommeded bake temperature is 400℉ or lower.
Tips for Using Schar Gluten Free Puff Pastry
Schar Gluten Free Puff Pastry tends to come out of the package cracked.
- Thaw the dough fully at room temperature for 3 hours prior to starting recipe.
- Wet your fingertips and press the dough together to repair the cracks.
- For best results, I recommend an optional rough puff pastry roll-out. It takes just a few minutes and makes the dough more pliable while maintaining beautiful, flaky layers.
- Lightly dust your work surface with a small amount of gluten-free flour.
- Fold the dough into thirds like a letter.
- Use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a rectangle.
- Give the dough a quarter turn.
- Fold it a letter again.
- Roll it out into a rectangle again.
- Proceed with the recipe as directed.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400°F.
To minimize breakage, carefully unroll the gluten-free puff pastry sheet on the provided parchment paper or on a silicone baking mat. If using Schar Gluten Free Puff Pastry, now is the time for the rough puff pastry rollout (see blue box above).
Spread a thin layer of Nutella evenly over the puff pastry using a spatula or knife.
Starting from one of the long sides, gently roll the puff pastry into a log. If the dough is sticking, use the parchment paper to gently lift the dough and peel back the paper, a little at a time.
Use a sharp knife to make small score marks on the log to guide where you will cut it into 12 slices.
For a clean cut, slide a piece of unflavored dental floss or thread underneath the log, bring both ends up and over, and pull to slice each piece. Repeat until you have 12 Nutella swirls.
Place the puff pastry swirls on a parchment-lined baking sheet. (If your dough has cracked, you can bake the swirls in a muffin tin to help them keep their shape.)
Bake for about 14-15 minutes until the Nutella swirls are golden and puffed up. Let them cool on a wire rack for about 5 minutes before serving.

Gluten-Free Nutella Puff Pastry Swirls
Ingredients
- 1 sheet gluten-free puff pastry (I use Schar Gluten Free Puff Pastry, defrosted for 3 hours. See recipe notes.)
- ⅓ cup Nutella
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400℉.
- Carefully unroll the gluten-free puff pastry sheet on the included parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. (If using Schar Gluten-Free Puff Pastry, do a rough rollout of the puff pastry dough to make it more flexible. See recipe notes).
- Use a spatula or knife to spread a thin layer of Nutella on top of the puff pastry sheet.
- Roll the long side of the puff pastry to form a log.
- Use a sharp knife to score the log, marking where you will slice to create 12 Nutella swirls. Use a piece of thread or unflavored floss to cleanly cut out each slice. Slide the thread under the log and toss both ends of the thread over the log. Pull each end to cleanly slice off a Nutella swirl. Continue until you have 12 slices.
- Place each slice on a parchment-lined baking sheet. (If the dough is cracked, you can bake them in a paper-lined muffin tin, which will help the swirls maintain their shape.)
- Bake for approximately 14-15 minutes, until golden and puffy. Place the Nutella swirls on a wire rack to cool for approximately 5 minutes before serving.
